Top 5 Tips For Getting The Most Out Of Your Fuel

31st October 2017 |

Let’s be honest, fuel’s expensive. When the fuel light comes on you can feel your wallet getting lighter. So how can we be more efficient and save our pennies? Follow these top tips and your money box will fill up in no time:

  1. Accelerate gently
Ease onto the accelerator pedal gently and gradually, hard acceleration consumes way more fuel than being gentle. Making those trips to the petrol station less frequent.

  2. Keep a steady speed
If you’re constantly dropping back down to 65mph then speeding back up to 70mph you could be using up to 20% more fuel than is you stayed at a steady 70mph, so consider using cruise control more often when you’re driving.

  3. Coast to decelerate
If you anticipate stopping early you could save a lot of fuel by simply taking your foot off the accelerator to slow down instead of braking, this will also reduce damage to tyres and brake pads resulting in fewer servicing costs, so it’s a win-win.

  4. Check your tyre pressure
If your tyre pressure is low it will be effecting your fuel efficiency as you will be increasing the rolling resistance of the tyre on the road, meaning it will require more effort, and therefore more fuel, to move the car along.  So make sure you’re checking them regularly.

  5. Change your air filter
This protects the engine from dust and dirt by catching it before it reaches the engine, so naturally it will clog up. Once it’s clogged the engine will put more fuel into the engine to help it run more smoothly. At this point the filter needs changing and you’ll see a big difference immediately, air filters need changing roughly once a year.

These are just a few of the things you can do to help your car be more fuel efficient and it’s a good start to make those trips to the petrol station a little less frequent.
